Writing Tips
Plot
PLOT is a VERB!
- Plot happens. Plot is movement.
- Every action should be important; everything must happen for
a reason:
- To advance the plot
- To describe the character
- To set the scene
- Tension and conflict are vital.
- Ultimate question by which to test your plot: "So?"
- Does anyone care about what happened in your story?
- Has something changed?
- Have the characters changed?
- If nothing has changed, is that important?
- What risks were the characters taking?
Viewpoint
- To switch within a story:
- Scene by scene
- Section by section
- Part by part
- In general, don't switch within a scene (though this is
something I do routinely :)
Setting
- Don't just describe the setting, unless it's absolutely vital
to do so
- Make the setting part of the story
Dialogue
- Eavesdrop!
- Listen to how different people speak:
- Cadence
- Words
- Speech patterns
Spelling and Grammar
- Learn it!
- Use a spellchecker, but also check for common spellcheck errors
- Have someone else read your work
