Gardening 2005
We've been very into the gardening this year. Not only do we now
have a proper vegetable garden, we also have no grass and only ornamentals
in the front yard. Well, no, we do hae s few grasses, but not the
mowing kind.
First, the veggie garden. In it we have planted: 4 types of potatoes,
sweet potatoes, zuchinni, 2 types of pumpkin, sugar snap peas, tomatillos,
basil, leeks, and broccoli raab.

stuff. It was taken on May 7. (See it with the evil
fence around it)
These are the potatoes as of June 4:

And they get bigger everyday in this really hot weather.
The veggie garden is beyond our fence right next to
the alley. Inside the fence are some herbs, but mostly ornamentals.

The above photo was taken on May 22, but it gives
you the basic layout. Now, the cannas
are growing insanely, and the chayote
is finally starting to grow up the pergola.
I don't expect to get any actual squash fromthe plants, since we
don't have a long enough growing season, but the vines should shelter
the pergola.
The portulaca
looks like it's always been growing there. The kiwi
are much happier this year than last, and we might actually get
some edible fruit this year! The palms
are settling in and the dogs are learning that their leaves are
sharp! The dinosaur
food is growing very rapidly, and we have to water it pretty
much every day to keep up with it.
The front yard is split into two halves by our steps
up the hill from the street. One half is a more traditional perennial
garden, currently somewhat neglected. We planted cannas there to
make it look a little better. The other half of the front yard is
Jeff's "creepy
garden." Here is how it looked in progress on May 22.

and other crap. Now, here's how it looks done, as of June 4:

We have a potato! Yay! We managed to grow at least
one!

As of the end of June, our chayote has decided to
grow like crazy. It's already near the top of the pergola. Soon
it will escape and rampage through the city. Luckily, the second
chayote vine isn't as vigorous, so they can't team up. Here's the
bigger one as of July 7:

Our cannas have also just barely started getting blooms
on them. Neglect is their fertilizer.

Finally, a random purchase at Meijer produced one
of the prettiest flowers ever: a pineapple lily:
