Kaylee's Recovery From Entropion Surgery

Entropion is a problem is a common problem for the Chinese shar pei. Kaylee had a pretty bad case of it and had to have surgery at Animal Care Unlimited - and she got spayed at the same time - yay!

I wasn't able to find any information online about the recovery from this surgery, so I thought I'd post photos and a journal about Kaylee's recovery. Some of the pictures are a little unpleasant, so don't continue if you have too soft of a heart.

Day 1

We dropped Kaylee off at 7:30 in the morning for surgery and picked her up around 6:30 that evening. She was still a little dopey, but she could walk. She was having problems with the e-collar, though (she kept getting stuck in corners), so we ended up carrying her out of the vet's office. She slept the whole way home, which is a vast improvement on her normal carsickness.

Her eyes were pretty swollen, and the stitches make her look like she has purple eyelashes. She has pretty hazel eyes, though, and it's the first time I've seen them so easily.

She slept pretty much all evening with about two potty breaks, then went to bed. She didn't sleep too well, but she did manage to get her e-collar off overnight. She didn't do any scratching, though, so I think she just wanted to be comfortable. I spent about half of the night on the floor with her, just letting her know I was there - she slept better when I was there.

Day 2

She was her happy waggy-tailed self this morning, and though we carried her downstairs, we probably didn't need to. The swelling has gone down considerably, and we're only using aspirin for an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever (our vet's office offered us Rimadyl, but we've had bad experiences with it before, so we decided to just go with buffered baby aspirin).

She was only interested in eating the wet food I put on her kibble, but she was drinking water just fine. We put the e-collar back on, even thought she's extremely grouchy about it. She slept most of the day, but tried to be her normal self when she was awake - jumping around and bothering the big dogs.

I took the day off just in case she had any problems, but I probably could have left her in her crate all day without a problem. She wouldn't have been happy, probably, but taking the day off probably wasn't required. It made me feel better, though.

Day 3

She slept well last night, with only one time where she needed a little company to get back to sleep.

The redness around Kaylee's eyes is almost completely gone, and the swelling is pretty much gone, too. She's her normal boisterous self, which means that she's spending most of the day in her crate, much to her dismay. At least she has the best nylabone in the house, and she's been comforted that Indy really wants it and can't get to it.

Her stitches must be getting itchy, because she keeps trying to scratch through the hated e-collar. When you scritch her head, she tries to turn her head to try to get you to scratch her eyes. The discharge from her eyes is lessening; I only had a little to wipe away this morning before I put her ointment in.

I have to admit, at first I was worried that they had over-corrected because her eyes wouldn't close all the way, but they seem just fine now. She's looking prettier every day.

Day 4

Kaylee had some trouble sleeping last night, but I think it was becuase she spent so much of yesterday in her crate. She's back in there again today, unfortunately, since she feels so good she's trying to play with Cordy.

Kaylee's appetite is back in full force and this morning she had a cup of kibble and a full can of moist dog food - we're taking the opportunity to put some weight on her, as well.

Some of the scabs on her stitches are starting to come off already, but Kaylee's a really quick healer. There was almost no discharge from her eyes this morning, and she was very patient when I was putting her ointment in. She spit out her antibiotics, but we finally got them stuffed down her throat.

Day 5

Kaylee has apparently decided that she no longer needs her meds and has begun spitting them out. Now we have to watch the little sneak to make sure she's swollowed them!

She was her usual rambuncious self, but got to spend some time in the yard today, confined to an ex-pen. Better than the crate, at least!

We took off her e-collar for a little bit and she was pretty good. When she decided that it was time to start scratching at her stitches, back on it went, much to her dismay.

Day 7

Day 8+

She looked pretty much the same until she got her stitches out, which was on day 10. Now, you can't even tell she ever had surgery!
