Volleyball Tournament

The real reason I went to Manhattan Beach, however, was for the
volleyball tournament held during Surf
Festival. This is what the beach looked
like at just before nine in the morning on Saturday.

Team Top Gun fulfilled the fantasies of many women who grew up in
the 1980s.

The team I came to see: Los Muchachos. The two about
to slap hands here are Fred
and Paul - the team captain.)

Fred: Brazilian pro with
a wicked spike. Played the front line.

The scene at about 1:00 on Saturday.

Los Muchachos celebrating a point. Guy standing at the far right
- Eric Etebari.

Team Top Gun changed into military-type stuff for the hot afternoon,
making hundreds of women very, very sad.

Sunday morning was the day of real competition. The team was a bit
light on
players at first, Saturday night being a traditional boozing event.

Paul arguing with the ref. Los Muchachos didn't appreciate being
pulled out of
bed and spent the first game arguing every single thing they could
(it was also
the game that could get them eliminated in one fell swoop, so it
was important)

Los Muchachos avoided elimination and went on to play all day.

My favorite front line: George,
Eli and
Fred.
They rocked.

They made the finals. The other team may look like a bunch of goofballs
(and they
were), but they played well.

Note the crowd for the finals.

Los Muchachos, the winners.
Back to Manhattan
Beach Mayhem.
